“My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42 NLT)
Perhaps a personal “house-cleaning” might be in order. Are all the things we worry about truly worth our loss of sleep and fussing over them? Think about it, how much of our lives are consumed with worry over worthless details? Is it possible that we need more concern and passion for something more important? Wouldn’t you like to kick this year off with a clean slate?
Just as Jesus said to Martha, “there is only one thing worth being concerned about.” Now there’s a project worth our time, effort, and concern: discover the one thing worth our concern. Of course, Mary had discovered that concern for the Lord’s presence and fellowship was the one thing for her.
Jesus refused to take away his fellowship and presence by asking Mary to help Martha deal with details of hospitality. Maybe that would be a good start for us in this new year. Begin each day fresh, aware of the Lord’s presence, and stay tuned in to his fellowship throughout the day.
Here’s a valuable habit: take a moment several times each day and empty your mind of all the clutter that concerns you — all the petty, annoying details and fears. As you fret and worry, so you will act. Therefore, change your worry to faith and trust in God. The more often you can change your thinking and renew your spirit, the more peaceful and passionate you will be about your purpose and the only thing worth any real concern.
Dear Father, thank you for your concern about our life and eternal destiny. Empower us with real concern for the only thing worth being concerned about. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be courageous and discover what is worth your concern,
