Truth Endures

“A truthful witness gives honest testimony, but a false witness tells lies. Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.” (Proverbs 12:17-19 NIV)

In these last days, it is a common phenomenon for each person to choose his/her own “truth.” Such philosophic scheming reminds us of Jude’s warning that ungodly people will try to change the grace of God into permissive immorality (Jude 1:4). The individual choice, however, doesn’t in any way change authentic truth.

Despite the human propensity to want life to proceed in a favorable manner, dishonest testimonies occur; false witnesses plague us; and reckless words pierce our peace. We need some healing from the wisdom of truth.

Sometimes people want situations and issues to be a certain way, so they begin to believe it is that way. Some will even proclaim it to be their way despite evidence to the contrary. By the way, that constitutes a false witness.

We might note that truth endures despite human changes or belief or schemes. Now this may seem like an academic abstraction to you, yet we cannot ignore Jude’s warnings. By the very nature of his thesis we may conclude that some subjects, taught as truth, are in fact false teachings. And we may note too that Jude is writing to Christians among whom false teachers have come, claiming to be Christians.

Some things just don’t change . . . truth is one of them.

Dear Father, thank you for the safety of your truth. Empower us to believe and practice your Word despite what anyone says. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be courageous today in God’s enduring truth,
