“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.” (Psalm 23:1-6 KJV)
This Psalm is so precious – so profound – that it almost defies commentary. It is best understood by meditation and contemplation.
Consider the lack of wanting. Meditate on the calm, peaceful rest in him. Consider the depths of a restored soul. He does it! Then, there is his righteousness . . . not ours but his.
Contemplate that his presence drives out fear, even in the valley of death’s shadow. He gives us the comfort of his Word and Holy Spirit.
His blessings are ours even though we are surrounded by the enemy. He anoints us for both physical and spiritual health.
Our cup of life cannot contain his blessings. And because the Lord is our Shepherd, we may expect goodness and mercy.
In addition, who would want to live anywhere else but in this Shepherd’s house?
Dear Father, thank your for your blessings. Grant us the steadfast faith to remain in your house forever. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today in the Shepherd’s presence,
