“Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.” Proverbs 9:6 (KJV)
It is so easy to go along with the majority. This is the key of peer pressure. However, we should remember the words of Anatole France, “If fifty million people say a foolish thing, it is still a foolish thing.”
Our personal values and beliefs are so important. The decision turns upon our desire to live. For you see, it is not about how much wealth you have, or what great position you have, or whether you embrace the latest fad. Will you enjoy sin for a season or life for eternity? Living is about eternity.
The wise teacher encourages us to forsake every foolish thing and pursue understanding. His word picture is one of choosing the right road to bring you to the journey’s end safely and quickly. But understand that it is a journey . . . a journey of growth and deeper understanding. Jesus said, “Make certain that you are not deceived by anyone (Mt. 24:4; Mk. 13:5).” Both Paul (Eph. 5:6; 2 Thess. 2:3) and John (1 Jn. 3:7) tell us to “refuse to be deceived.” Remember that “the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God” (1 Cor. 3:19). Which is better: the wisdom of God or the foolishness of this world?
Dear Father, thank you for the way of understanding you have provided. Empower us by faith to reject the foolishness of this world and choose your way of understanding. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN
