“Let us choose what is right; let us know among ourselves what is good.” Job 34:4 (ESV)
Choose what is right . . . Don’t you just wish that every decision would be the right one? Some people think their every decision is “the right one” because they choose by impulse of desire. Yet, choices are our constant activity, sometimes without conscious consideration.
Many of those decisions are benign . . . we could have decided another way and it wouldn’t have made a huge difference in our lives. But some are extremely important to the focus of our lives. It is that level of choice that I want to influence.
A particular choice, with its inherent ramifications, is not the concern. The essential element of choosing is already present in us. So what is the issue? Wise choices or foolish ones! The right choice or the wrong one! Is our life focus toward God and wisdom or toward fleshly, satanic foolishness?
Somewhere in the path of our lives, we decide by conscious thought or by default. “Every person’s ways are right in his/her own eyes: but the LORD ponders the hearts” (Proverbs 21:2). We generally make life choices that are aligned with our moral beliefs. Post-modern society has decided that moral absolutes do not exist (i.e., there is no right or wrong); everyone decides what is right or wrong for him/her. The Bible speaks about this: “There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness” (Proverbs 30:12 KJV).
If we have made foolish choices in the past, we can still change our minds, change our choices and choose wisely. “Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil” (Proverbs 37:7 KJV). Herein is the grace of repentance . . . change choices, depart from evil. Choose wise living over foolishness.
Changing one’s mind (choices) is not the private sphere of women. Men can also choose what is right and good, even after bad choices.
We have choices today. Choose wisely. Choose well. Choose right.
Dear Father, thank you for the choice of your grace. Give us the grace to repent when we have made bad choices. Enable us to always make choices that align with your eternal purpose. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today and choose what is right,
