“And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.” (1Cor. 9:25-1 NKJV)
All around us — our families, friends, and coworkers — people feel the effects of economic trouble. Some greater than others, but none are exempt. When we compare our income to the rising prices of necessities, it becomes clear that some of our dreams and goals may take longer than originally planned.
At times like these, we begin to understand the wisdom of Paul’s words in today’s passage. We are especially glad that we have used self-control in our economic choices . . . that new car . . . a bigger house . . . diamonds for the wife.
Many people seem more interested in “staying ahead of their neighbors” (a perishable crown) than keeping their head above water. They have an attitude of easy come, easy go. God’s people, however, are more concerned with heavenly things (a non-perishing crown) than earthly things. We are not competing for earthly prizes. We do not measure a person’s worth by how much stuff he/she collects here on earth.
We do not run toward an uncertain goal. We do not beat the air around an unknown opponent. Rather, we discipline ourselves to not be deceived. We bring our appetites under control so that our witness may truly impact others, and so that we will not be disqualified from receiving our crown.
In this New Year, don’t get trapped by the spirit of “what-could-be.” Give thanks to God for his present blessings. Get busy and construct something good out of your circumstances. Transform your attitude and life. Resist the spirits of “must-have” and “more-and-more.” Your resistance will free you from them. You will discover that you save money and gain the serenity of contentment.
Dear Father, thank you for your son, Jesus Christ who is our example of self-control. In 2010, empower us with self-control and contentment. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today as you seek the non-perishing crown,
