“Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” St. Matthew 5:3 (KJV)
This is not about material poverty. It is also not about spiritual weakness or immaturity. Being poor in spirit is about total dependence on God. It is about freedom from arrogance and pride. It is about humility.
We need a Savior. We cannot save ourselves. Individuals who acknowledge their insufficiency before God are blessed to possess the Kingdom of Heaven. This attitude, “I can give my way to heaven” or “I can be a good person,” will keep us from enjoying the blessings promised here. Some think that they can “do good works” and get an entry ticket to heaven, but without faith in the Son of God our good works will be worthless.
The key to a poor spirit and heaven is submission of self before God and acknowledging our need of a Savior. Humbly placing our lives and eternal destiny in His hands, by faith, is what opens the Kingdom of Heaven to us.
Dear Father of Heaven, thank you for your gift of grace. O Lord, I humbly acknowledge my need of your mercy and grace. May each person who reads these words also acknowledge this personal need. Guide us in our lives and ministries. Enable us to walk humbly before you in the Spirit and for your glory. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today by faith in the Savior . . . the key to heaven,
