“Finally, brothers, good-by. Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.” 2 Corinthians 13:11 (NIV)
The great Apostle has written about many things in this letter: his personal afflictions, forgiving the offenses of others, the new covenant, not giving up, the ministry of reconciliation, aggressive progress in holiness, generosity, a defense of his apostolate, his visions and revelations, and his concern for the Corinthian believers. Finally, he closes the letter with these words: Strive for perfection; Encourage one another; Agree together; and Live in peace.
What great counsel! It is so wise and practical. We could title 2 Corinthians 13:11 as Paul’s Four Keys To Church Success. Note the principles involved: spiritual growth, encouragement, unity, and peace.
Now consider that no one is an island. “For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone” (Rom. 14:7). Paul’s thought in today’s passage hinges upon a cooperative spirit and attitude. The key to Paul’s exhortation is the Greek adjective “together.” The exhortation comes in the form of collective imperatives (the plural you). They are to strive together for spiritual growth (perfection). They are all together responsible to encourage one another. They are to agree together (unity). Despite their disagreements, they are to live in peace together. The Corinthians needed one another and so do we.
Dear Father, thank you for your grace and mercy. Empower us with a cooperative spirit and attitude. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today and encourage others,
