The House That Wisdom Builds

“Through wisdom is a house built, and by understanding it is established; and by knowledge are the chambers filled with all precious and pleasant substance. A wise man is strong, and a man of knowledge increaseth strength.” Proverbs 24:3-5 (DBY)

The lifestyle we choose is the house in which we live. Character, values, attitude, and so forth are the chambers (rooms) in our house. The foundation for our house is laid by our parents, family and social relationships, early education, and our personality traits. Thank God for parents who wisely train their children!

But, consider this. Who we are today is not entirely our parents’ fault. It’s true they established the foundation and erected the framework — we appreciate their wisdom — but they could not complete our house. So how do we complete the house?

We must seek our own wisdom. “If any of you lack wisdom, ask God for it and wisdom will be given to you, because God non-grudgingly gives it liberally to all persons” (James 1:5 my paraphrase). Proper understanding is important to every house. Each room becomes precious and pleasant because of the knowledge possessed by the inhabitant. Of course, all knowledge is not equal. That is why careful consideration must be given to choices and gaining understanding.

The wise person will build his or her house on a solid foundation. And when the hurricanes of life blow, the house will not be destroyed. A solid foundation, wisdom, and knowledge keep it strong.

Dear Father, thank you for your wisdom. Grant that we may continually build on it through knowledge and understanding. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN

Let us praise God for his wisdom and live to his glory,
