“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.” (Psalm 121:1 KJV)
Just when we think we have a good grip on our lives, a curve appears – or a bump – or a pothole – and sometimes a wreck. Due to our good upbringing, we are particularly self-sufficient (or think we are) and resist any help from any source. Then everything goes south and to the best of our ability we don’t have a clue how to resolve the issues and restore our lives.
The Psalmist’s circumstances must have deteriorated to the point of helplessness when he penned this Psalm. He had a good job, he was mature and an upstanding citizen. His family and friends enjoyed his fellowship. Yet, something happened that made him lose control.
All his efforts to restore the situation to normal failed, forcing him to remember the hills of help. With God’s help, his life would be restored to normal. The tension we humans experience involves the urge to control and direct things. The Lord always knows what lies ahead, but we don’t. So He is better equipped to control and direct.
The Lord never sleeps so He misses nothing. He never permits our foundation to erode. He is our constant protection from all evil. He protects us as we go about our daily lives and he protects us as we come home to rest. So we raise our eyes and look at his hills of help because his grip on our lives is better than any we could maintain.
Dear Father, thank you for your help and protection. Grant that, with life and all our issues, we may look to you for help. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be courageous today and look to the Lord for help,
