“I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.” John 10:14 (KJV)
I suppose there are various levels of shepherding. Some good and some not so good. The quality of care would, I suppose, depend upon the character of the shepherd. Unfortunately sheep (the animals) do not have a choice of who their shepherd is.
The chief characteristic of shepherding, however, is the knowledge of shepherd and sheep. The shepherd knows his sheep. He knows them so well that he understands their body language and actions. He can not be deceived about his sheep.
The whole existence of the sheep depends upon their ability to recognize the shepherd. He provides all their wants and needs. He prepares peaceful resting places. He finds calm waters and brings the sheep there to drink. He walks among them assuring them of his continued support and care. He leads them carefully down the right trails. Even when danger is near, the sheep do not fear because he is with them. They depend upon his rod and staff to protect them from the lurking enemy. He provides them with food despite the enemy and brings healing to their wounds. The sheep love him because he is so good.
The sheep know the shepherd so well that his voice is enough to keep them safe. They will not follow a stranger because the stranger does not sound like the shepherd.
Dear Father, thank you for being the Shepherd of our souls. Enable us to know you so well that we will not be deceived by hirelings. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN
Let us praise God for his care and live to his glory,
