“In the beginning God . . .” (Genesis 1:1 KJV)
It is a difficult task for us to consider the beginning. Where it all began . . . when it all began . . . how it all began . . . who it all began with. This last point gets to the heart of the matter. This is, of course, a senseless discussion if humanity and its environment are the results of exploding atomic matter or the capricious coincidence of evolution. But if there is a creative, sentient being who started it all, then the proverbial horse has a different color.
God . . . alone in the vast, empty void of nothingness. It is almost more than a finite mind can fathom. We have no reference points from which to relate this concept. How can nothing be perceived much less occupied or moved across? Yet, God, desiring to be loved, surveyed the empty void of nothing and created something He called light. From that point on it was a simple process of adding sufficient elements until his dream of having someone to love him was complete. It is complicated to us, but simple for the all-knowing Creator.
We can only surmise what it was like, but it must have been an “illuminating” moment for God (one of those light-bulb effects) as He surveyed the mass of nothing . What was He thinking just before his creative juices began to flow? What to do today? Let’s create something. What shall it be? Ah, lets create some creatures who will love me. How shall we create them? Well, here’s this empty mass of nothing. Lets see what we can do with it.
The Apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesian believers, “he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love” (Eph. 1:4 KJV). In his infinite, wisdom, our creative God certainly knew what his creation would need in order to survive and thrive (light, sound, atmosphere, food, water, etc). So, as a loving Father, he provided all these before he created the ones who would choose to love him.
Dear Father, thank you for choosing us before the foundation of this world. Stir the fire of our love for you that we might be holy and blameless before you. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
