I am a reader. It is
a hobby of mine. Back in elementary school my classmates called me
“bookworm” because I read all the time. I was disciplined by teachers
more often than not for reading a book behind the text book in the middle of
class.

When I went visiting
with mom or dad, I would spend my time perusing the library or bookshelves
where we were visiting. In fact, as a boy, most of the books I received were
from people who noted my interest and gave me books from their own bookshelves
to read.

I always loved to
spend time in the school library, not studying but walking the aisles and
looking at all the books. The vast number of books always amazed me. With the
curiosity of a cat, I wondered how a person could read all those books. I
dreamed of having my own library where I could spend hours on end enjoying any
book that I desired to read.

It is always a joy
to read books because they are windows into the soul of an author. He/she opens
a door and lets us see a bit of him/herself that we wouldn’t have seen or
understood without reading the book.

But when I was
introduced to the Bible, I found it to be a two-way mirror book. It refers to itself as a “two-edged
sword.” You can look into its perfect law and see yourself. And it can see
into you and reveal things that you either can’t see or refuse to see
otherwise. It penetrates the hard shell surrounding soul and spirit. It even
discerns what we are thinking and what we understand about our thinking. It
truly is a living, powerful book that changes lives.

Dear Father, thank
you for your book of truth. Enable us to submit ourselves to its living power
that it might do its best work in our lives. I pray this in the name of Jesus.
