The Awesome God

“Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. How awesome is the LORD Most High, the great King over all the earth!” Psalm 47:1-2 (NIV)

How awesome is our God! His actions on our behalf produce clapping and great joy. Yet, how easy it is to forget that our circumstances are not too difficult for God.

Consider the children of Israel in the exodus from Egypt. Scholars estimate approximately 3,000,000 people were involved in this famous exit. Now, we have very little biblical evidence that Moses organized this trip to any degree. In fact, a cursory reading would conclude that hardly any organization took place. Yet, logical reasoning would suggest that this event would have required careful planning and organization. Still, we find no place where Moses discussed it. We are led to believe, and properly so, that Moses moved by faith in the awesome God who was directing the move.

Lets consider the requirements for this huge migration out of Egypt, across a desert, into Canaan. Three million people would require huge amounts of food each day . . . about 1500 tons. In addition, they would have needed fire wood for cooking . . . about 4000 tons. And if we include drinking water and water for cleaning up . . . about 11, 000,000 gallons.

And then another thing! The Egyptian army began chasing them, so they did not have time to go around the Red Sea . . . they crossed it . . . in a space of about 3 miles wide.

Now, remember Moses seems to have left these logistical details up to God. He believed in the awesome God who had called and sent him from the burning bush. And God took care of these things for him.
