“Blessed is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one has stood the test and will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. No one, when tempted, should say, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil and he himself tempts no one. But one is tempted by one’s own desire, being lured and enticed by it; then, when that desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and that sin, when it is fully grown, gives birth to death.” James 1:12-15 (NRS)
Someone has written, “Temptations are sure to ring your doorbell. But it’s your own fault if you invite them to dinner.” This unknown author has simply stated scriptural truth.
Once we understand that temptations are created by our own lustful desires, we are better equipped for enduring them.
James implies that endurance is the major route for victory over temptation. Sometimes endurance is the only weapon we have against temptation. But we have the promise that endurance is the evidence of spiritual maturity and approval, which is rewarded by the crown of life.
Dear Father, thank you for the strength to endure the temptations in this life. Forgive me for yielding to past temptations. Deliver me from my own lustful desires. Empower me to endure future temptations. In Jesus’ name I pray. AMEN
Let us praise God for his grace and live in enduring approval,
Pastor Smith
