Superstition vs. Truth

“I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.” Acts 17:22b (KJV)

Modern language versions of Scripture translate this verse somewhat differently. I think, however, that the context favors the KJV rendering. Paul, the Apostle, had observed all the devotions of the citizens of Athens. These Romans were so religiously confused that they even had a statue erected “TO THE UNKNOWN GOD.” It is interesting to note that Paul claimed they were worshipping him ignorantly (v. 23). That is a phenomenal observation considering their attitude (vss. 18 & 21).

These Epicurean and Stoic philosophers questioned, “What will this babbler say?” No, he probably did not speak in tongues. Rather, they considered his argument of Christ and the resurrection as philosophical babbling (v. 18). And they didn’t consider that he could teach them anything. In addition, they were not interested in identifying truth (v.21). They were only interested in philosophically discussing “some new thing.”

In the 21st century, we have our “philosophers” too. And like the 1st century Epicureans and Stoics, ours are also confused about the One True God and his truth. The email waves are full of confusing, superstitions. From claims of blessings or curses if you don’t forward something right down to the 6th day of the 6th month of the 6th year of this millennium. Pardon my “soap box” soliloquy, but I am appalled at the number of these superstitions I receive from pastors. It is no wonder that Christianity suffers from a lack of biblical understanding.

Paganistic superstitions have plagued the Church since Emperor Constantine proclaimed himself to be a Christian. What would happen to Christianity if we would shed off 17 centuries of superstitious ignorance? Jesus said, “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” St. John 8:31b-32 (KJV)

Are you one of his disciples?

Dear Father, thank you for your grace and mercy. Forgive us our superstitious beliefs and practices. Enable us to run from temptations and deliver us from evil. Empower us to obey your Word and know the truth. Keep us free through your truth. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN

Let us praise God for the truth of his Word and live in the freedom it provides,

Pastor Smith
