R & R

“Come to Me,
all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke
upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will
find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
(Matthew 11:28-30 NKJ)
Rest, relaxation and
recreation . . . a vacation . . . time off from work. It’s how we think when we
are physically and mentally tired. And we all need a physical and spiritual
break from time to time. God created us to take regular breaks from work . . .
to rest and rejuvenate. Even Jesus made it a habit to get away from the crowds
and rest from the fatigue of ministry.
I wonder, though how
much thought we give to the actual cause of our fatigue. Fear and anxiety create a sense of unrest about
the state of world affairs, about career challenges, about family circumstances
and other such issues. What does the future hold?
Where am I going? How will I provide for my family? What am I going to do now?
Questions, questions and more questions! Laboring to find the answers, we fail
to ask the critical question.
The one critical
question that most often doesn’t get asked is: Who do I trust? In the midst of
fear, doubt, anxiety and uncertainty this question is crucial. Jesus said, “All things have been delivered to Me by My Father” (v. 27).
Now we can trust the one in whom all authority resides. When he speaks,
troubles vanish, hearts are mended, circumstances change and people are
transformed.
When we are weighted
down by the issues of life, Christ has invited us to come and let him give us rest.
And he doesn’t merely want a few minutes once in a while, he invites us to
harness our lives to his. Harnessed with him we learn things we have never considered
before. Harnessed with him we discover his gentle and humble spirit. Harnessed
with him we discover that our anxiety is dispelled. We discover a peace that
surpasses anything we could have imagined.
Ah, rest!
Dear Father, thank
you for giving us rest in Christ. Enable us to bring all of life’s cares to
Christ and rest in his care. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Trust in Christ’s
peace today,
