“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” (Luke 2:11-14 KJV)
Twelve days before Christmas and the intensity of preparations is increasing exponentially. Rushing here, rushing there, everywhere hectic — almost chaotic — rushing.
We might even get frustrated about how busy we allow ourselves to become. If we are not sensitive to the Spirit of Christmas, we could miss the blessings; not enjoy the visits and fellowship; take the gifts for granted; and be disappointed when the holidays are all over.
Something about that story so long ago stills stirs the hearts of men and women, boys and girls. It still brings joy to families and homes around the world. It still shouts: “Glory to God in the highest!” It still brings peace and good will to people everywhere.
The story includes an arduous journey to enroll in a government census and to pay taxes in Bethlehem. Because of the enrolment decree, the town is so crowded that decent sleeping arrangements cannot be found. A baby is born in a stable and laid in a manger. Shepherds relaxing with their sheep just outside town are regaled with a celestial musical and encouraged to find the newborn babe . . . because he is the promised Anointed One, the Savior, the Lord .
This good news still brings great joy to weary, thirsty souls. The story still thrills children and adults alike. Such good news is just what wise men are looking for today. God is still our loving Father who reminds us year after year of his Christmas gift in that Bethlehem stable so long ago.
His gift still reminds us to praise him: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men!” If we let it, this good news will remind us to slow down, take it easy, enjoy the festivities and fellowship.
Dear Father, thank you for your gift of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Empower us to boldly give glory to you and him. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today and praise God for his gift,
