“The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You support my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me.” (Psalm 16:5-6 NAS)
I grew up in a pastor’s home in a poor neighborhood of South Gadsden, Alabama. I didn’t know I was poor. My contemporaries at school didn’t know they were poor. We all lived in the same neighborhood. Our dads and moms all worked at the Republic Steel mill or the Goodyear Tire & Rubber mill.
The majority of our families were church-going believers. We all knew everyone else in the community for blocks in every direction. It was a good era in which to grow up. Most people were hardworking and honest. We could go to town and leave our doors open without fear of anyone breaking in while we were gone. Consequently, we couldn’t get into much mischief without getting caught. Some adult would inevitably see us, correct us on the spot, then tell our parents about it.
The majority of us, who grew up there, never received an inheritance of great material wealth because our parents never acquired very much. Yet they left us the greatest inheritance we could have received. They passed on their faith in Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior. So, the Lord is our portion — our cup. His territory is pleasant to us. Our heritage is beautiful — exquisite really — to us.
Dear Father, thank you for parents that prepared us for an inheritance in Christ Jesus. Empower us to truly appreciate our heritage, remembering that it comes from you. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be courageous today in celebrating your heritage,
