Our Excellent God

“O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!” Psalm 8 (KJV)

What a marvelous privilege to know the Only Excellent One in all the universe! His glory surpasses all the beauty found on any continent in this earth. His wisdom exceeds the knowledge and experience of all of the “wise” men on the earth. Only he is mighty enough to use an infant’s strength to cause his enemies to cease and desist.

Consider the creation all around us. Note how he placed the sun and moon in their orbits. He hung the stars in their places and calls them by name. Our universe is his handiwork and the excess space is available to his creative impulse. Yet, he is not an absentee creator. He holds things in order and keeps things running smoothly. Certainly he has a lot on his mind! Consider that he placed us just a little lower than himself and other celestial beings, yet he crowned us with glory and honor. He placed all of his creations under the power and authority of human beings. He didn’t just visit with us; he lifted us up to glory and honor!

So, why did he do this? Why does he remind himself of us? Why does he recall that we are here? Why did he visit us? Why does he visit us? The answer really is very simple yet enormously profound. He loves us!

“O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!”

Dear Father, we glorify you for being our Creator and God. Glory to your holy and excellent name! Empower us to exhibit and proclaim your glory. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
