“Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the LORD your God:” Deuteronomy 28:1-2 (NAS)
The ancient servant of God sat in front of his tent and looked across the camp. He watched the people going about their daily activities. He thought back over the years of wandering and considered what he should leave with them as his final legacy. God had already explained that he could not go with them into Canaan. Moses knew, however, that a catalyst was needed to drive home the importance of obedience to God. Father Abraham’s children had proven themselves unfaithful too many times. The future would only get worse. Perhaps the only thing to do is show them the alternatives before them. Then the choice is theirs, as well as the results.
They must be reminded that their character is the basis for their lives. Who they are determines the results of life’s choices. Rich, full, and abiding blessings come as a result of what they are spiritually. The awful terrors of divine curses also come as a result of one’s spiritual condition.
Right here a caution might be appropriate. 21st century believers must not be deceived. Along with faithful obedience, the believer must also use his/her God-given gifts along with common sense, personal industry, planning, and organizing.
Note the promises. To be “set high above all nations.” Blessed in the city (your home). Blessed in the field (at work). Blessed with children. Blessed with material wealth. Blessed with food. Blessed coming and going. Blessed to defeat your enemies. Blessed with an “everything you touch” blessing. Blessed with holiness. Blessed with a Godly reputation. Blessed with divine protection. Blessed with multiplied prosperity. Blessed with children. Blessed with increased income. Blessed with living in the promised land. Blessed with an open heaven. Blessed with financial security (lending but not borrowing). Blessed to lead and be an example (head not tail; above not beneath).
The specified blessings are personified as individuals who follow the obedient around through life. With all these promises, why would any nation or individual refuse to observe and obey the specified requirements? Let us renew our personal commitment and trust God’s grace to enable us to be faithful.
Dear Father, thank you for the promises in your Word. Grant to us the faithfulness of obedience that we might receive your blessings. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be courageous today in obedience and receive God’s blessings,
