Mercy Displayed

“Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners– of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” 1 Timothy 1:15-17 (NIV)

“What a beautiful day,” Melissa thought as she looked across the lake. The glistening sunlight shimmered across the water’s surface, interrupting her deep contemplation. She was at a crucial time in her life. She mused, “Does my life count for something? When my friends look for examples, do they point to me?” She had read somewhere, “Use your life carefully, for there are nor re-runs.”

We are display models. Hollywood, advertisers, trendsetters, and preachers are always searching for a model, an example, a display. But character and integrity can’t be painted on or purchased. And when we go looking for a model life, we should choose carefully. In addition, like Melissa, we begin to carefully consider the life we are displaying for others.

Paul, the Apostle, understood that God had saved him for one reason. He understood who he was: the worst of sinners (v. 15) and what mercy he had found (v. 16). But he also understood why he had received it. Note his words, “I found mercy for this reason, so that in me, Jesus Christ might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe in him for eternal life.” (italics are mine).

Dear Father, thank you for demonstrating your patience and mercy through the beloved Paul. O Lord, empower our lives to also display your mercy so that others may believe in you for eternal life. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be encouraged today in his display of mercy,
