Living Water

“Whoever drinks
of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall
give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in
him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” The woman said
to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to
draw.” (John 4:13-15 NKJ)
The title of my
sermon was “From Slavery to Freedom” and I shared the story of Rahab
and the destruction of Jericho as related in the biblical Book of Joshua. In
this story I related how we all have our stories. Joshua’s narrative was not
merely the story of a prostitute who exercised faith. Rather, it is the entire
journey from slavery to freedom — Israel’s, Rahab’s and ours — encapsulated
in this event at Jericho.
During this sermon,
something I said directed my wife’s thoughts to “living water.”
Though Bobbie doesn’t remember my exact words, she says that it triggered the
story of the woman who met Jesus at the well in John chapter four. And she
thought of Anniston’s Coldwater Springs reservoir. Here is a classic example of
the Holy Spirit speaking through a sermon to individual needs.
Here in Anniston,
Alabama, the Coldwater Springs reservoir collects water that takes forty years
to filter through the natural aquifer system and arrive here. This water is
some of the coldest, best tasting and most satisfying water there is anywhere.
In known history,
Coldwater Springs have never slacked in their water supply, not even in the
worst of droughts. In addition, there are species of fish living here that do
not exist anywhere else in the world. Scientists do not know how long these
springs will continue. They could stop producing tomorrow or continue until
Christ’s return.
When the Samaritan
woman met Jesus at the well, she was on a journey from slavery to freedom. To
her credit, she asked for the drink that Jesus offered which would deliver her
from her slavery and make her free. And Jesus guaranteed that his “fountain
of springs” would never run dry!
Dear Father, thank
you for your gift of the fountain of living water that doesn’t dry up. Empower
us with the a steadfast faith in your eternal, life-giving water. I pray this
in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Drink from Christ’s
living waters today,
