“The lamp of
the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is
full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness.
Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. If then
your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be
full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.”
(Luke 11:34-36 NKJ)

A lamp is a source
of illumination and clarity. It allows us to see everything in its sphere. A
lamp also produces the light from which illumination proceeds. This is so
important to understand in relation to our Lord’s exhortation.

Our eyes enable us
to see our world. They will take in everything with a focused view. This means
that they will focus and “see” only what is desired to be seen. The
focused seeing is why we miss things “right before our very eyes.”

For most of us, the
mind is not able to focus on and simultaneously consider both evil and good.
Instead, we see one or the other and think about one or the other based on what
is in us. It is a heart-based perspective. “For as he thinks in his heart,
so is he” (Proverbs 23:7 NKJ). Jesus said, “Take heed . . .”
(v.35).

We see what we want
to see. And often, our “sight” is of our own making. We are
illuminated by our own heart-formed opinions and beliefs. And when our heart is
dark with “evil,” our eyes will fill us up with darkness. But when
our heart is filled with light, our eyes refuse any part of the dark and the
whole body shines.

Dr. Calvin Miller
wrote, “When you allow Jesus to shine His light into your life, the path
ahead become glorious with illumination.” Perhaps that is why Jesus said,
“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and
glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14 & 16 NKJ).
