“And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.” (Psalm 9:10 ESV)
When Bobbie and I move to a new city, we usually experience a period of frustration while trying to find a physician, a mechanic, and other services. Since we do not have those relationships established, we inevitably ask members of our congregation for their recommendations. In such situations, our problem is knowing who to trust. And because we do not know, we lack trust and are afraid to seek. Of course, after a few months, we settle in and develop relationships. And relationship enables us to know who we can trust and who we can go to with our needs.
That demonstrates why David’s prayer is so important for us: “those who know you put their trust in you, Lord because you have never forsaken those who seek you.” What a great confidence builder! His prayer shows us that he had a relationship with Jehovah. His relationship with Jehovah gave David the confidence to trust Jehovah. And because he trusted Jehovah, David knew that he would have his need supplied when he sought Jehovah’s help.
I often tell the church I serve: “I do not know everything, but I know the One who does.” We may not know everything that will transpire in this New Year, but we can know the One who holds it in his hands. God already knows what 2010 will be like for us. All we need to do is form a relationship with him and trust that He knows, understands, and will respond to us.
“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:14-16 ESV).
Dear Father, thank you for the relationship we enjoy with you. Empower us with the confidence to trust you and seek you with all our needs. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
