“Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.” Romans 14:19 (NIV)
“Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.” Hebrews 12:14 (NIV)
The 21st century concept of Christian holiness comes out of the holiness movement begun with the American revivalists of the 1880s. We should understand that biblical holiness is not a movement. It is not a form of dress. It is not some higher plane of Christian experience or perfection. And it is not a denominational doctrine. Rather, biblical holiness is the believer’s lifestyle, which naturally develops as the consequence of following and learning Christ.
Some 21st century Christians, however, are so arrogant about their holiness beliefs that it keeps them from being at peace with others or allowing for mutual edification. The challenge for us seems to be forgetfulness. In a society where churches sit on every corner, it is easy to forget that we live in a pagan world. In a society where skepticism and libertarianism runs rampant, it is easy to forget that people are watching us. In a society where me, my, and mine are the dominate priorities, it is easy to forget that Jesus commanded us to “live in peace with all persons.”
Too often, holiness is thought to focus only on clothing, haircuts, or ungodly habits. Holiness, however, encompasses our entire, three-part being. Holiness contains an essential element, which is often missing from sermons on holiness . . . peace. Peace with others (i.e. auto mechanic, bank clerk, grocery clerk, customer service person, neighbor, friends, family, etc) requires a strong dose of self-control. It does not matter how we dress, fix our hair, or teach holiness, if we do not control ourselves in a peaceful manner with other people.
Mutual edification and seeing God are good reasons to be peaceable and holy people, don’t you agree?
Dear Father, thank you for your grace and mercy. Thank you for the revelation of your Word. Thank you for giving us determination to rely on the Bible as your inerrant Word. Grant to us the faith and maturity to grow in the knowledge and grace of Jesus Christ. Empower us to boldly share that knowledge with others. In Jesus’ name. AMEN
Let us praise God for his guidance and live holy before him and in peace with all,
Pastor Smith
