Help In the Time of Need

“I look up to the mountains — does my help come from there? My help comes from the LORD, who made the heavens and the earth!” Psalm 121:1 (NLT)

The dictionary defines “coincide” as: “To happen at the same time.” In addition, “coincidence” is defined as: “A sequence of events that although accidental seems to have been planned or arranged.”

Such “definitions” tend to totally ignore any consideration of God and faith as a viable part of the equation. Simply because we cannot empirically explain, or even understand certain sequences of events, neither indicates “coincidence” nor chance outside the knowledge and activity of God.

Was the creation of the universe an accidental sequence of events? To answer “yes” requires more faith than believing in an all-knowing, all-powerful Creator. The possibility of an accidental sequence of events that resulted in the heavens and earth is so remote as to be empirically impossible. On the other hand, however, the concept of a Creator who planned, arranged, and created all that exists is not only possible but entirely probable. We must not forget, however, that divine creation of the universe must be accepted by faith (Hebrews 11:3). That’s right. It is a matter of faith.

Where does help issue forth? It is not found in the protection of anything we might consider as a “mountain” refuge. Certainly, not from events that seem to be “coincidental.” We would all go bonkers waiting for such events to occur at just the right moment of need. Do the math for yourself. There are over 6 billion people on this planet, with the population increasing every second. Multiply the population by normal human needs. Then, consider how many sequential accidents would have to occur everyday just to supply those needs. I don’t think we should look for or depend upon such an illusion.

Where does help issue forth? Many of us have discovered that real help comes from the Lord’s mountains. Yes, it is true that we cannot always explain his planning and arrangement with empirical evidence or answers, but we are certain that since God created the heavens and the earth, He is able and willing to issue help to us as our need arises. Our faith in God is more credible than believing in or gambling on an accidental sequence of events.

Dear Father, thank you for your help in our time of need. Strengthen our faith. Enable us to share our faith with others. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be encouraged today by God’s help,
