Help

“And I will
pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with
you forever– the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it
neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and
will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.” (John
14:16-18 NKJ)
The house became
quiet — unusually quiet — my grandson, Grant, was no where to be seen and
making no sounds. What was he doing? The finger of dread begin to stir my
spirit. Then I heard a quiet voice say, “I could use a little help
here.”
After the third time
— I could use a little help here — I got up and went to his bedroom. There
Grant sat in the middle of his bed. His arms encompassed all of his stuffed
toys and he could not get off the bed. But he wanted to get down and bring them
all into the den to play. He needed a helper to achieve his goal.
From John’s
narrative, it is evident that Jesus knew his time on earth was short and his
disciples would be alone without his physical leadership. They would need a
helper to achieve their assignments after he was gone. Looking at their worried
faces, he explained that they would not be abandoned. Instead, he would send
someone who would help each of them achieve all he had commissioned them to do.
The Twelve were
overwhelmed with the enormity of their assigned tasks and the sorrow of the
Lord’s departure. They wanted to obey and achieve his purpose, but they were
paralyzed by uncertainty and feelings of inadequacy. Each of them may have been
thinking, “I could use a little help here.”
And knowing what was
required, Jesus promised them a helper. This helper would come from the Father.
His assistance would never end. His name is The Spirit of Truth and unbelievers
would not know him. In fact, he would only come to, “abide” with and
live in believers. A divine helper that only the Lord’s followers could
receive.
The Lord was not
abandoning his disciples like children without fathers. Instead, he was
providing them with a guardian. A protector. A guide. Someone who would teach
them and guide them into all truth. Someone who would comfort them in their
sorrow and distress and weakness. He knew they needed a little help here and he
promised help would come.
Dear Father, thank
you for the comfort and help of the Holy Spirit. Empower us with the confidence
of his presence. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
