Guidance

“For this God
is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.”
(Psalm 48:14 KJV)
This GPS
thing-a-muh-jig is a technological phenomenon. We can be digitally hooked up to
an unseen satellite which plots our position at any given moment. It can plot a
travel route and give us directional guidance to a specified destination. Of
course, there are any number of other consequences that accompany the Global
Positioning System technology.
Think of the
advantage, however, of being able to simply input your present location and
your destination address and the GPS computes your best route. Sounds good,
especially when your flight is late, you’ve never been to your destination
before or you are confused about which way to go.
But what happens
when you arrive near your destination and construction is blocking your
progress? What about when a river confronts you and there is no bridge? What
about when the GPS states categorically that your destination is on your
left, but it is a vacant lot? Well, no one is perfect, not even GPS technology!
You might circle the
block, look around for signs on nearby buildings (a GPS can be off by a few
meters), consult a map, or ask a local for further directions. Any one of these
might misguide you even further into the tangled web of confusion. Unknown
alleys, one-way streets and dead-ends are just a few of the frustrating things
that can occur.
Now, you may expect
me to claim that God’s guidance is sometimes like the GPS, but I won’t. You
see, I believe that God is never, ever confused. He never has incorrect data.
He is never surprised by events or things that obstruct our progress. We are
the ones who think he has abandoned us, but he hasn’t. We are the ones who
think he has missed the point, but he hasn’t.
God’s guidance is
always — ALWAYS — according to his will. And his will always includes what is
best for us. His will always includes a deepening of our relationship with him.
His will always includes us arriving safely at our destination.
Dear Father, thank
you for the guidance of your Word and the Holy Spirit. Empower us to listen
attentively to your voice. It is in the name of Jesus that I make this request.
AMEN
Let Christ guide you
today,
