Guard What God Has Entrusted To You

“. . . guard what God has entrusted to you. Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge. Some people have wandered from the faith by following such foolishness.” (1Timothy 6:20-21 NLT)

We Christians have a heritage of trust that has been passed down to us from Christ by the Apostles. Jude refers to this deposit of truth as “the faith that God has entrusted once for all time to his holy people” (Jude 1:3 NLT).

It is tragic that our post-modern society so easily rejects “the faith” as the stable foundation for life, family, and civilization. Jesus was concerned about this issue even before Calvary and the Resurrection. Note his question: “when the Son of Man returns, how many will he find on the earth who have faith?” (Luke 18:8 NLT).

The Lord expressed his concern after teaching the value of a persistent prayer life: “always pray and never give up” (Luk 18:1 NLT). And in today’s Scripture, we note Paul’s instructions to “guard what God has entrusted to you.”

The great Apostle instructs young Pastor Timothy that some practical understanding goes along with our prayer battles. We should refuse to be involved in godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose what has been entrusted to us.

Isn’t it interesting that such opposition always tries to confuse the issues “with their so-called knowledge.” Paul warns that such discussions and falsehoods amount to foolishness and will lead you away “from the faith.” So, we can see the wisdom of his caution: Avoid godless, foolish discussions with the opposition.

Dear Father, thank you for your Son who is “the truth, the way, and the life.” Empower us to always pray and never give up what has been entrusted to us. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be encouraged today in the truth of God’s Word,
