“So now the LORD says, “Stop right where you are! Look for the old, godly way, and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls.” Jeremiah 6:16 (NLT)
God’s spokesman, Jeremiah, proposes a solution to Israel’s situation. Perhaps it is something for us to consider in ours. Perhaps we are looking in all the wrong places for a solution they do not have. New paths will fail us. New paths are dead-end streets. Rather, the proper path is still the well-worn, ancient highway of holiness . . . the godly way. The path may be well-worn, but it is the way to walk because it is God’s way.
The way of God is the way of rest. Rest from our worries. Rest for our souls. Rest from trying to figure out a solution. Rest from seeking a new way.
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light” (Mat. 11:28-30 NLT).
“So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.” Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall. For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires” (Heb. 4:6-12 NLT).
When we submit our most intimate thoughts and desires to the way of God, a solution will be found.
Dear Father, thank you for your way . . . the tried and true way. Grant to us the faith we need to rest in your way and your solutions. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today with God’s way,
