God’s Promise of Guidance

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.” (John 16:13-14 NIV)

How has God been guiding you lately? Has a Scripture verse “jumped off” the page to you? Has something the preacher said really stuck with you? Is there a song you just can’t get off your mind? Maybe it was a dream or still small voice in the silence. In any case, perhaps there is a personal message from God in that experience.

We have the Lord’s promise that the Holy Spirit — the Spirit of Truth — will guide us. Evidently, Christ assumed that we would want his continued guidance. And of course, his disciples do. So, we enjoy the unlimited guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Yet, from time to time, we experience difficulty understanding his guidance. And sometimes, we just aren’t certain whether a particular stimulus qualifies as his guidance. The limitations are ours not his. The Lord’s promise is still valid for the 21st century disicple . . . “he will guide you into all truth.”

In prayer, ask God to show you how to listen in the Spirit. Ask him for more insight and understanding. Ask him to help you discern and know the difference between your emotion and his guidance.

Dear Father, thank you for guiding us by your Word and the Holy Spirit. Forgive us for failing to truly listen. Enable us to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
