“Then the angel
said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of
great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the
city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to
you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising
God and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill
toward men!”” (Luke 2:10-14 NKJ)
Christmas cards,
what a blessing they bring. I look forward to every one of them. They
acknowledge more than acquaintance. They speak of a personal relationship with
someone dear and special. Someone takes precious time and effort to write a
personal note, expressing Christmas greetings. Well, call me old fashioned.
That’s okay with me. Consider, however, that antique things in life sometimes
give the greatest value to life.

Electronic cards are
nice and sincerely appreciated, but they miss the “relational” aspect
of Christmas greetings. There’s something warm and personal about receiving
“snail-mail” cards. They must be opened with more than a mere click
of computer keys. Sure they take more time, but that’s more than half the fun.
Once handled, they enrich life and can be savored longer as we daily pass by
the annual display of friendship over the mantle or pinned to the doorposts.
E-cards can’t be hung on the Christmas tree!

In Luke 2, we are
told that Caesar Augustus sent out a decree. It was not a decree that anyone
liked, but every person in the Roman Empire responded accordingly. Yet, in
Heaven’s throne room, God had made a different decree and angels proclaimed his
glad tidings and the great joy his decree would produce in mankind. Caesar’s
“greeting” was a cold, impersonal demand. God’s greeting was a
personal invitation to a relationship.

Yes, God made a huge
sacrifice to send his Christmas card. It cost him more than we can imagine.
More than the cost of cards, stamps, and envelopes. More than time for writing
notes and licking stamps and going to the mail box. More than we can imagine, but
he thinks we are worth his sacrifice!
