God’s Children

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.” (Rom 8:14-17 KJV)

Yesterday, Bobbie said she saw a squirrel scampering along in our backyard scavenging food tidbits. She said it was as though he knew there would be scraps and crumbs left for him. It reminded her of the Canaanite woman who interrupted the Lord’s rest and relaxation with a request for her daughter’s healing, but was told “it’s not proper to give the children’s bread to the dogs.” The lady replied, “That’s true, Lord, but the dogs are allowed to eat the crumbs that fall from the master’s table” (Mt. 15:21-28 & Mk. 7:24-30).

When Bobbie told me about the squirrel looking for the crumbs, I was reminded of the Lord’s provision for his children (Mt. 6:25-34). We (his children) so often live so far beneath our station that we are like the squirrel in our backyard. We are scrounging for crumbs when we should be enjoying the overflowing provisions of his table.

We are not pets under the Lord’s table that are offered the scraps and crumbs that fall on the floor. We are not furry little rodents scurrying about in all types of weather trying to survive on the natural gifts of a gracious creator.

No, dear friends. We have been bought by the precious blood of our beloved Savior. We were despairing in the world’s orphanage of rejected misfits. Nobody loved us. Nobody wanted us. Nobody that is BUT GOD. And God loved us so much that he gave his only Son as a sacrifice for us so that by believing in his Son, we could both receive his eternal life and be adopted into his family as his children (John 3:16 & Gal. 4:7).

I know his eye is on the sparrow, but I am one of his children and I eat at his table! Everything on his table is mine. Oh, yeah, everything on the table can get on my plate. It is for me to receive and enjoy. No crumbs on his table, no tidbits of leftovers — only full provision — only everything necessary to supply all my needs. I want to shout, Hallelujah! Don’t you?

Dear Father, thank you for all your riches in glory that supply all our needs. Transform our minds that we will eat from your table rather than scrounging like squirrels. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be courageous today as on of God’s children,
