Generosity!

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 (NIV)

It is interesting how many believers elevate and glorify “what’s in the heart” when it comes to giving. Many seem to equate self-justification with humility and obedience. The idea that “it’s not how much but what’s in your heart that counts” is self-justifying excusitis. Generosity is the spirit of a loving God who gave Christ to us generously and without regard for personal consequences.

We certainly should not measure our giving by what others are giving. Generosity is not a braggart’s game of one-upmanship. It isn’t about the one who gives the most wins the prize. Giving isn’t even about winning anything. It is about loving God and others. It is about partnering with God to achieve his plan and purpose. It is about obeying God. Generosity moves the Kingdom forward.

Generosity! What a marvelous financial concept! You and I decide what we will give. We decide how generous we will be. Paul simply reminds us that the extent of our generosity determines the extent of the blessings we receive in return. Generosity doesn’t grow out of a reluctant heart. Generosity doesn’t grow out of a coerced or forced situation. Generosity is a product of the love of God. It grows in a happy heart that is full of joy. Generosity is liberated by our confidence in the God who gives us his overflowing grace in all our circumstances and in all our needs. Generosity is not a “one time only” deal. Our God gives his overflowing grace to us at all times! And because he does, we have all we need and can overflow in good works to his glory.

Dear Father, thank you for your overflowing grace and mercy. Empower us with confidence in your generosity and enable us to be generous in our overflowing good works. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN

Let us praise God for his generosity and glorify him by following his example,
