“Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” (1Peter 5:6-7 KJV)
If we go online and Google “the Bridge To Nowhere,” we get about 1,430,000 hits. There are many accounts of bridge projects that were stymied by legislation, budgetary constraints, mismanagement, and natural disasters. Most of these bridges were designed to connect remote areas with nearby populations, but were never finished. They remain useless, leading to nowhere.
Over a lifetime, we may build similar bridges, brooding over the “what ifs” – the could have been – of past decisions. If we would just have done this or that differently instead of what we did. And we fail to admit that such fretting and worry lead to nowhere. We cannot change our past decisions and actions.
Consider our recent misgivings. Have you purchased an item one day only to discover when you get home or during the next week that you could have gotten it somewhere else at a bargain? After making a good decision, based on all available data, we feel a smug satisfaction until another “special” comes along that would have saved us money! It is usually too late to switch.
We usually spend the next several days grumbling and brooding, berating ourselves over our loss. Such self-inflicted pain and suffering is useless and gets us nowhere. That’s where a good friend needs to step up and say, “your fretting is getting you nowhere. Get over it and get on with your life.” Good friends do that.
Worry about the past will only destroy your present. Your present and future are more important than time wasted grousing over the past. Change the present by confidently acting in faith and trust that the Holy Spirit will guide you in mapping out your future.
Dear Father, thank you for the guidance you give us through the Holy Spirit. Empower us to abandon our worries and daily cares into your care. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be courageous today in the guidance of the Holy Spirit,
