Free Water, Free Life

“And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” (Revelation 22:17 KJV)

In America, we have been conditioned to look suspiciously on anyone who gives something away for free. All the “wise ones” around us say: “You’ll never get anything worth anything for free.”

We just can’t believe that anyone would truly give something of value for free. It certainly is true that most people do not appreciate the things they get for free as much as something they have bought. I wonder why? It is entirely possible that a free gift could be more valuable than the one you bought.

In addition, we are suspicious of the “free” gift because we suspect there is something attached . . . a future favor . . . something owed to be collected later. Yet, if the “giver” attaches favors owed or anything else to the gift, then it is not truly free.

And yet, God loved you so much that He gave his only Son to be a sacrifice for your eternal salvation. He didn’t owe you a chance, an opportunity, or a sacrifice. He gave it to you for free — no charge of any sort. He knew then, and knows now, that you could not afford this gift. It is truly priceless and worth more than any person can possibly imagine.

Still He freely gives “the water of life” to anyone who is thirsty and will listen to his invitation to “come.” There is no imaginary fountain of youth somewhere to be found by an explorer. You do not have to find the so-called holy grail and drink from it. You only have to come in repentance and faith to Christ . . . God’s free gift.

Dear Father, thank you for your free gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Enable us to come and receive this free gift. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be encouraged today in the free water of life,
