“Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous” 1 Peter 3:8 (KJV)
After every election, opposing campaigns must be put aside. The passions of differing views must be controlled. Compassion for the nation and courtesy between its citizens must prevail. The reality is that political grumpiness will continue for weeks and months, but courtesy should be the mark of Christians in the public arena.
We should be the paragon of thoughtfulness . . . compassionate . . . understanding . . . tenderhearted . . . humble. Note that the foregoing attributes are not weaknesses. Indeed not! Rather, a strong person will exhibit these because of his/her personal fortitude. Our behavior and attitudes of courtesy, compassion, and humility are not signs of weakness. They are the marks of strong Christians and should not be mistaken for compromise.
Finally . . . what a thought! I know that in today’s passage it indicates Peter’s summary point. But consider that the 21st century world is on the brink of the Lord’s return. We live in the last days! So, “finally” let us consider what is truly important to our nation and its citizens. Morality has sunk to an all time low. Belief in and worship of the Only Wise Eternal God are steadily decreasing. And pulpits seem to be more interested in material wealth than spiritual transformation.
The most important need in America is a spiritual awakening in America’s churches. A real revival in America’s churches would produce a spiritual transformation of American society. Finally, pray until it comes.
Dear Father, forgive us and our nation for our sin. Have mercy, we pray. Restore the joy of your salvation to America. Thank you for Jesus Christ, our Savior. In his name we pray. AMEN
Be encouraged today in our Savior,
