Faithful and Dependable

“Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.” St. Luke 12:42-44 (NIV)

How easy it is to make excuses. We’re too old or young, uneducated or have too much, no experience or expertise, blah, blah, blah. It’s the economy, our boss, the people we work with, blah, blah, blah. I’m never given an opportunity; no one has confidence in me, he kisses up that’s why, blah, blah, blah.

At first glance, there is some glamour in being chosen as the food manager for God’s servants. But as the realities of duty take hold, one considers the challenges carefully. The food must be nourishing. Just any old something or other isn’t good enough. God’s servants must have the best. Occasionally, some warmed up left-overs are okay, but only occasionally! And, most excuses just don’t cut it. God’s servants get hungry at regular intervals. So, the food must be prepared fresh and hot and served at the proper time. To do the job effectively one must be qualified, but don’t forget, the Master has entrusted us with our callings and ministries. No matter what your ministry, be faithful until he returns.

In today’s passage, according to Jesus, faithfulness is tied directly to action. In order to be declared “faithful and wise,” the steward or manager must be dependable in his duties and responsibilities. The rewards and promotions are only given to those who dependably discharge their assigned duties. Jesus challenged his disciples to recognize such dependability as faithfulness and wisdom.

Dear Father, thank you for your faithfulness to us. Empower us with a dependable spirit and attitude. Enable us to be faithful in your service. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be encouraged today and be faithful,
