Examine me, O Lord

“Judge me, O LORD; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide. Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart. For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes: and I have walked in thy truth. I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with dissemblers. I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked. I will wash mine hands in innocency: so will I compass thine altar, O LORD: That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.” Psalm 26:1-7 (KJV)

Today I go for my oral exam on my Doctor of Ministry project. The infamous dissertation defense. It is the culmination of a long road. An end to the preparation phase for a new journey. What is the new journey? I don’t know. The road ahead is not as clear as the road behind.

My journey to this point has been long and arduous, demanding. It began several years ago when I committed myself to being a truth-seeker. Back then, I never imagined that I would pursue a doctorate or even more education. It wasn’t about that. Rather it was about searching for God and his truths. The education and qualification just developed over time as natural steps in my adventure to know God and serve him better.

At times I have been tempted to give up and quit. But then I am reminded that God has called me to this search for truth. And as a result, I become aware of the responsibility I have to him and to those to whom I minister. Such calling and divine confidence humbles me. I am unworthy of his mercy and grace. It is only by his guidance and encouragement that I have finally come to this place in the journey. I give all the glory, and honor, and praise to him now and forevermore! Today I will be examined by a panel of fellow travelers, but one day I will be examined by the Judge of all Judges. That is the examination I am preparing for.

Dear Father, thank you for your grace and mercy. Empower us to prepare for the ultimate examination. Enable us to stand in that day confident of your love and grace. This I pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN

Please pray for me this afternoon as I stand before my examining committee.
