“Now therefore give me this mountain, whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.” (Joshua 14:12 KJV)
Here Caleb presents his petition to take possession of Hebron — “this mountain” — and not to have it put into the lottery that would determine the tribal portions of the promised land.
In verse 6, he reminds Joshua of what God had promised him through Moses. Therefore he had good ground for both his desire and the expectation that it should be granted. What can be a better guarantee than the Lord’s promise? We may confidently expect that He will grant what He has promised!
As his words show, Caleb was confident of God’s power to give him possession of Hebron. With full conviction of success, Caleb knew that no opposition — no matter how big or strong — could keep him from possessing God’s promise, if God would be with him.
Note that Caleb’s faith was in the power of God upon his own action, He said, “if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.” Caleb didn’t expect God to defeat the giants in Hebron with his involvement, but he didn’t expect to defeat them by himself. He knew that his success depended upon the Lord’s presence and help.
Dear Father, thank you for the confidence of your promise and presence. Grant that we may possess the mountains that you have promised to us. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today in the promise of God,
