“Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners– of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.” 1 Timothy 1:15-17 (NIV)
“What a beautiful day,” Melissa thought as she looked across the lake. The glistening sunlight shimmered across the water’s surface, interrupting her deep contemplation. She was at a crucial time in her life. She mused, “Does my life count for something? When my friends look for examples, do they point to me?” She had read somewhere, “Live your life carefully, for there are no re-runs.”
We are display models. Hollywood, advertisers, trendsetters, and preachers are always searching for a model, an example, a display. But character and integrity can’t be painted on or purchased. And when we search for an example to follow, we should choose carefully. In addition, like Melissa, we should carefully consider how we are living before others.
Paul, the Apostle, understood that God had saved him for one reason. He understood that he was “the worst of sinners” (v. 15). He understood what mercy had been given to him (v. 16). And he also understood why he “was shown mercy.” Note his words, “Me, the worst sinner, I was shown mercy so that Jesus Christ might display his unlimited patience in me as an example for those who would believe in him for eternal life.” (italics are mine).
Dear Father, thank you for demonstrating your patience and mercy through the beloved Paul. Empower our lives to also display your mercy so that others may believe in you for eternal life. I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be a courageous example today,
