Confronting Suffering

“Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.” James 5:10-11 (NIV)

How do we confront suffering? Opinions are numerous and varied on this subject. Yet, there are only four biblically safe perspectives concerning suffering. First, it is a natural, human experience whether one is a disciple of Christ or not. The New Testament writers encourage Christians to not give up in their suffering; to persevere through their suffering; and so forth. They do not, however, teach that Christians should not, will not, or do not experience suffering. Second, the real issue is not IF we will suffer, but WHEN. Third, the personal issue becomes a question: HOW do we deal with the suffering? And fourth, the answer to the question is found in the examples in the Bible.

We may note that the New Testament writers write in generic terms. In most instances, they do not identify specific suffering. And their generic discussions may be due to the reality that we all suffer in various ways and are affected uniquely.

So then, James writes that patience is the biblical example to follow. Who else had patience? The prophets who preached in the name of the Lord persevered patiently. They were abused and ill-treated because of their messages, but patiently persevered. And of course there is the famous story of Job who was God’s servant yet suffered physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Job is not only an example of patience and perseverance, but also an example of God’s merciful deliverance and compassionate blessing. Look what the Lord brought about!

Trust in the merciful God! Patiently persevere in your suffering, and the compassionate God will deliver you out of the suffering. Those who persevere are blessed!

Dear Father, thank you for your mercy and compassion. Empower us with a trust that patiently perseveres. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be encouraged today in God’s mercy and compassion,
