“But if we walk
in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and
the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1John 1:7

Most mornings I open
my laptop and begin work on a devotional. Searching for an appropriate
Scripture that inspires me or “speaks” to me. Psalm, prophecy, Old
Testament character, New Testament grace — anything that moves me with its
message. I also regularly read other devotionals to see how Scripture has
spoken to others.

Yesterday (Feb. 6,
2013), you may have noted I talked about Ash Wednesday which, in fact, isn’t
until next Wednesday (Feb. 13th). So once again, my proverbial cart got in
front of the horse. And I wasn’t satisfied with just a devotional, I was so
inspired that I preached about it at church last evening. And wasn’t aware of
this faux paux until my wife and others pointed out that Ash Wednesday was
still seven days away. OOPS!!!

My personal delete
button was out of order. Of course, the delete button cannot work if one
doesn’t realize a delete is needed. And this error only emphasizes to me, if
not to everyone else, that mistakes are inevitable. Perhaps I need to verify
facts — maybe look at the calendar — before blasting off into the outer space
of inspiration.

Such a slip may seem
trivial now. Some of my congregational friends laughed with me about it. But it
really punctuates what I wrote yesterday about letting go of the past. On
second thought, maybe reminders are not such a bad thing, after all.

Volumes could be
written on mistakes, but walking in the light of Christ makes them unnecessary.
His light always gets the message through. Dust and ashes? Yep, but I am not
walking in them. Instead, his light leads me in the grace of God’s cleansing.

Dear Father, thank
you for Calvary’s cleansing power. Empower us to walk in the light as Christ is
in the light. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
