Believe!

“Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do
not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you,
the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do
greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.” (John 14:11-12
NRS)

It seems that the Twelve had a challenge in believing Jesus. Earlier, they
had acknowledged him as “the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Mt. 16:13),
but here at his final hours they are not certain he is telling them the truth.

He said, “do not be troubled or afraid. You believe God believe me also”
(Jn. 14:1). Perhaps their expressions hinted of their skepticism. Philip,
however, boldly told the Lord that he didn’t know where Jesus was going and therefore
didn’t know the directions.

Jesus patiently replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me” (v. 6). But Philip pressed
further, “Show us the Father and that will be sufficient” (v. 8).

Despite his knowledge of all things, Philip’s words must have disappointed
Jesus. Yet, he replied, “Philip, have I been with you all this time and you
still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say,
‘Show us the Father’?” (v. 9).

His miraculous work should have convinced
them of his identity. And anyone who believes in him will do similar work and
even greater miraculous work than he did. Belief in him is the key for both who
he is and what he promised.

Dear Father, thank you for showing yourself
to our world. Empower us to believe who you are and what you have promised.
This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be strong and courageous today and believe,
