“If you then,
being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will
your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!”
(Matthew 7:11 NKJ)

The World’s Longest
Yard Sale, is a four-day event beginning the first Thursday in August. This
“tons-of-yard-sales” event continues for 690 miles from Gadsden,
Alabama (my home town), north along Tennessee’s Cumberland ridge and up to
Addison, Michigan. It is a bargain-hunter’s dream with more than 5000 front
yard entrepreneurs along the entire route and more than 1,000 in Alabama alone.

aficionados come from across the country and the world searching for that rare
find in antiques, memorabilia and collectibles, furniture, dishes, fruit and
vegetables, homemade items and bargains. Most of them will barter for bargain
prices while others simply enjoy the various attractions and entertainment
along the way.

Today’s Scripture
passage is the culmination of our Lord’s teaching on asking, seeking, knocking,
finding and so forth (Matthew 7:7-10). Like all the bargain seekers of the
world, God-seekers must go to God with their requests in order to receive them.

This is not a
complex concept. In fact, simple yet ignored by millions, it sets forth the
principle of a seeker’s determination and a father’s love for his children.
Like a father, God only gives good things to his children! If people are
complaining about not receiving, we might wonder what they have requested.

Now personally, I
wouldn’t spend the money to travel 1380 miles round-trip to find a supposed
bargain, but I will bend my knees and ask my heavenly Father for his best. He
has promised to give me good things, if I will only ask him.

Dear Father, thank
you for giving us good gifts. Empower us with the enthusiasm and gratitude of a
child who receives a requested gift from his/her father. I pray this in the
name of Jesus. AMEN
