As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!” When He entered the house, the blind men came up to Him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” Then He touched their eyes, saying, “It shall be done to you according to your faith.” And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them: “See that no one knows about this!” But they went out and spread the news about Him throughout all that land. Matthew 9:27-31 (NAS)
Have you ever wondered how these two blind men knew about Jesus? Had they heard of him through their families or friends? Were they in the crowd of 5,000 who were fed fish and bread? Who convinced them that Jesus was the Son of David? What had they learned about him that convinced them he could heal them?
Note that Jesus did not ask any of theses questions. Their request was simple: have mercy on us. It is unlikely that they could have given a discourse on the theology of divine healing. In response to their request, Jesus did not give them a lesson in how to be healed. And he did not ask them whether they understood how healing worked. Rather, he asked them a simple but profound question: Do you believe that I am able to do this?
The miracle was better than any theological discussion of the problem. And more importantly, faith in the miracle-working God was better than the resultant miracle. I do not know if God will ever explain His miracles to us, but knowing Him and having faith in Him far outweighs any definition or explanation of what and how and why.
In our circumstances, whatever they are, we should be responding to His question: Do you believe that I am able to do this? “It shall be done to you according to your faith.”
Dear Father, thank you for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who takes away our sin. Grant to us an unwavering faith in Him. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be encouraged today in your faith,
