Acceptable Speech

“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14 KJV)

What can one say when everything has been said? It’s not about new inspiration or profundity. It’s just that there is nothing else to be said. God has already said it all. What are our words in comparison to his?

Each day speaks on his behalf. Every night expresses his knowledge. To the extremities of this planet his voice is heard through the voices of night and day. In his dumb-struck awe, David sees a metaphor of God’s message to the residents of this globe. Together, day and night form a tent for the sun from which it enters and exits as it revolves around the earth. The sun’s exit from the night resembles a bridegroom leaving his home on the way to collect his bride. It makes him think of a victorious athlete who has just won a race. Their enthusiastic rejoicing affects everyone who comes into contact with them. In this same manner, the sun’s heat is felt by all residents of the earth. So, daily the earth’s citizens are impacted by the joy, love, and enthusiasm of the Almighty God upon their lives.

Is it any wonder that David is overcome by his awe of God? When God has spoken the perfect law, there is nothing to say. Simply be converted. God’s testimony is complete, full of wisdom, and needs no additions. We rejoice over his righteous statutes, and his pure commands enlightens our understanding. Our desire is to possess an enduring, holy awe of our God, because righteousness and truth are united in his judgments. They are more valuable than earthly wealth. They taste better than the finest sweets. They warn us of dangers and reward our obedience. The world’s smartest people cannot discover any error in God’s message, The humblest among us simply asks God’s forgiveness for secret, presumptuous, dominating sin. We know this is the only path to his mercy.

Dear Father, thank you for your mercy and grace. Like David we are awed and pray, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” I pray this in the name of Jesus. AMEN

Be encouraged today in God’s strength and redeeming grace,
