“Remember that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize. You also must run in such a way that you will win.”
1 Corinthians 9:24 (NLT)
Jamaican born, Canadian athlete, Donovan Bailey set a world record of 9.84 seconds in the 100 meter sprint at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, GA. This Oakville, Ontario stock broker was suddenly rocketed into sports limelight and acclaimed as ‘the world’s fastest man.’ His Olympic win, however, almost didn’t happen. By his own assessment, Bailey had already won so many times that he had developed overconfidence. He didn’t think he needed any further training or coaching. So how did he win the race? Several experts also asked that question. They carefully reviewed and analyzed the race tapes to discover his secret. What were their conclusions? These sports experts agreed that Donovan Bailey was still accelerating as he crossed the finish line.
There was a time when I was a sprinter. Then, as time went on, I slowed down to a little jogging. Now, a brisk walk around the track leaves me out of breath. Bobbie asks me to go for a walk and I try to think up good excuses to not to get on the track. As I think about this, I am reminded of the example I am called to present to others. Ask for volunteers and many people will reply, ‘I’ve done my part. Ask some of these young people to do it.’ Others will respond, ‘I am retired. I just want to enjoy life.’ Still others will reply, ‘I’m too busy. Work (family, children, etc) doesn’t allow me any free time.’
Perhaps we should consider Donovan Bailey’s coach. He wouldn’t allow Bailey to rest on the past or his personal confidence. Our coach, the Lord Jesus Christ, won’t accept coasting either. Yesterday’s gone. Today is the day of opportunity. Today we have more resources than ever. Today we are more knowledgeable and wiser than ever. Today we can still exercise our God-given gifts. Today our dreams are brighter than ever. Today we can accelerate as we go for the finish line.
Dear Father, thank you for Jesus Christ who finished the race for us. Empower us race-finishing faith. Enable us to accelerate toward the goal. In the name of Jesus, I pray. AMEN
Be encouraged today in the race that is set before you,
