“Enoch walked with God” Genesis 5:22 & 24 (NIV)
Each day father and son made this journey together. Three times around the track completed a mile. They usually did nine. At first, Enoch probably didn’t want to walk but he loved his father, who liked to walk. Enoch just wanted to be with him. Being with his father calmed him down and gave him strength somehow. Sometimes they talked. Sometimes they just walked silently along hand in hand listening to the morning sounds. Enoch noticed that his day always went better after his walk with dad. The few times he had not walked with his dad, showed him that he needed this walk, so now it had become a daily, joyous habit.
When Enoch was born, Yared probably never considered the impact his son would have upon their society. Yet, he obviously taught Enoch the benefit of walking. The lessons surely included the importance of choosing a walking partner. As any responsible father would, Yared taught Enoch to carefully choose who it would be. Yared knew that his son’s walking partner could influence him for good or bad. Obviously, Enoch learned the lessons well. We are told that he left the witness that “he pleased God” (Hebrews 11:5).
God invites us to be his walking partner. At first, it might be a little uncomfortable, but walking with God will grow on you. Each day we should take his hand and walk. By doing so, we will influence our generation.
Dear Father, thank you for the privilege of walking with you each day. Create in us a hunger and thirst for your fellowship. Grant that our relationship with you will affect those around us. This I pray in the name of Jesus. AMEN
Be courageous today in your walk with God,
